GENEVA COLLOQUIUM

9 -14 JANUARY 2017

THE COURSE IN GENERAL LINGUISTICS. 1916-2016. THE EMERGENCE

The Geneva Colloquium is more specifically devoted to the emergence of the Course in General Linguistics, from the lectures of 1907-1911 to the appearance of the book constructed with piety and erudition by Bally and Sechehaye, to the translations of the inter-war period and on to our own time.

It seemed fitting, in this commemorative logic, to accord the demanding privilege of evaluating the philological examination and criticism of the book’s construction to Geneva, which harboured the “crystalization” of Saussurean thought in matters of general linguistics.

Nevertheless, the organizers of the Colloquium eagerly welcomed proposals for ‘independent’ workshops, detached from the themes circumscribed for the parallel sessions, in the hope that they will give rise to fruitful discussions on the perspectives that Saussurean themes and concepts have opened up for present-day researchers, and indeed on research perspectives that are still incubating.
